Biography

1910 Born in Tourcoing, Northern France

1911 Death of his father

1931 Began study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lille and Paris; soon decided to leave the Academy

1933 Married Valentine ; settled for two years by the river Meuse in Belgium. Two sons will be born in 1934 and 1944

1936 First of his numerous journeys to the Netherlands where he sees works by Rembrandt, who impresses him for fifteen years

1937 First solo exhibition in Lille , France

1943 First exhibition in Paris, France

1954 Exhibition in Paris with Sam Francis, Poliakoff and Marcel Pouget

1956 In Spain, much impressed by Goya, Zurbarán, Velasquez nd El Greco; travelled to Florence, Arezzo and Urbino. Discovered the work of Masaccio.

1972 Travel to New York and Washington; discovered the work of Mark Rothko.

1982 Retrospective show in Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Gent, Belgium

1983 First exhibition in Galerie Michael Werner, Cologne, Germany

1988 Exhibition in Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Netherlands
